The WIne

In archery, the key to the “center shot” is achieving perfect balance. It’s the skilled alignment of the arrow rest to the bowstring’s nocking point, and without it you’re off target. Every vintage, we strive to get the balance of our Arcus Vineyard just right. Precise vineyard management requires reacting to the elements (every year being inexplicably different) as we try to bring in a vintage that nails the target. While we believe there is no such thing as a perfect wine, we aim for the center and in vintage 2019 we are confident in our shot.

Arcus Vineyard is the mesmerizing preface to the Archery Summit story. Our oldest vines are anchored to the steep, bowl-like contours of this rocky site. Originally planted in 1973, our flagship parcel encapsulates the striking topography of the Dundee Hills and the appellation’s long-standing ability to produce immersive Pinot noir. The technical nature of the vineyard demands skilled farming, while its multitude of exposures affords an eclectic array of fruit profiles. There’s tension at Arcus Vineyard; while it is tucked away in one of the many folds of the Dundee Hills, it is physically impressive and seemingly infinite. As you zigzag up its dramatic vineyard rows, the nickname “Yosemite of the Dundee Hills” begins to make a lot of sense. On wetter days, the vineyard crew is known to wear soccer cleats for better footing while tending these vines. Our Center Shot wine is chosen by the adept winemaking team at Archery Summit, led by winemaker Ian Burch. The wine is made with judicious amounts of whole cluster and predominantly pumped over to minimize extraction creating supple tannins on a characteristically rich mouthfeel. Aged for nine months in 30% new French Oak, then six additional months in neutral oak, there is a balance of tannin, ripe red fruits and notes of bramble, moss and forest floor.

Learn more about this lot during Preview Week (July 26–30) when winemaker Ian Burch will present this wine during a virtual tasting session on July 27. Register here. Ian is also monitoring our July 26 sessions, so be sure to check out the full schedule if you’d like to catch him in action!
