The Wine

Our 2019 Auction lot is again sourced from a single block on our estate. The auction is the only time we offer single block–designate wines, creating a rare insight into our estate, as our traditional lineup are all estate cuvées. This vintage was sourced from Block 16, affectionately nicknamed Chloe’s block, after the young stray pup who wandered in one sunny May day while we were working in the vines. Chloe warmed quickly to the crew, and eventually became a permanent member of the winery family. Chloe’s block is a perennial component of our top cuvées, but this bottling showcases its stand-alone pedigree.

Chloe was the best kind of rescue dog, a medium-sized, sturdy dog of unknown lineage. Looking at her, you could see that she definitely had some kind of terrier, and she was sweet, loyal and little bit scrappy. We don’t know what her story was prior to wandering into Colene Clemens, but you learned quickly not to leave your lunch anywhere within her reach! Her block sits along a tree lined ridge in the heart of the vineyard, where she could spend time close to the crew but also keep busy chasing critters through the vineyard and among the brush. Block 16 (aka Chloe's block!) features the Dijon 115 clone and is part of the original plantings on the estate, with vines nestled in thin marine sedimentary soil. With modest vigor, this block typically produces medium-bodied wines with supple tannins and warm spices.

Learn more about this lot during Preview Week, when winemaker Stephen Goff will present this wine during a virtual tasting session on July 30. Register here.

The Winery

Located where the Chehalem Mountains converge with Ribbon Ridge, our 122-acre property was acquired in 2005. With an elevation of 350 to 650 feet, this rocky, south-facing hillside is composed of marine sedimentary and volcanic basalt soils. Completely dry-farmed, our 62-acre vineyard consists of five different clones: Wädenswil, Pommard, Dijon 115, Dijon 114, Dijon 667 and Dijon 777. Our farming practices can best be described as sustainable, and we use organic farming whenever possible. We are firm believers in taking care of our soil, practicing crop reduction for low yields, and hand-harvesting our fruit at its optimal physiological ripeness.
