The Wine
syn·er·gy /ˈsinərjē/ noun: the interaction of two or more substances to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.
With our 2018 Auction Pinot noir we have attained that greater effect by blending our oldest plantings, from 1973, and our youngest block on the property, planted in 2007. Both blocks are 100% Pommard. These two blocks found perfect synergy in this very special wine that we have crafted for you. Elegance, depth, breadth, longevity: a quintessential Oregon Pinot noir from the famed Jory soils of the Dundee Hills. Cheers!
This wine is made from 100% Pommard-clone Pinot noir, which underwent 25% whole-cluster fermentation in three-ton concrete tanks. 100% underwent pump-overs. The wine was aged for 12 months in 33% new French oak and 67% neutral barrels. This 2018 Durant Vineyards Synergy Pinot Noir has an elegant and vivacious entrance. The complexity on the midpalate highlights ripe red fruit, spices, subtle floral notes and well-rounded oak characteristics. The lively acidity retains tension among velvety tannins for a generous and lingering finish.
The Durant Family have been pioneers in the Dundee Hills. They planted their first vines in 1973 and have been providing fruit from their vineyard for almost 45 years. They were purely growers for the first 30 years of their existence. In 2003 the family decided to start their own wine brand. They utilized the expertise of numerous winemakers over the years, having their wine made by Jesse Lange, Isabelle Dutartre, and Marcus Goodfellow, to name a few. In 2018 they finally decided to pull the trigger and build out a winery on property, so this 2018 Auction wine is the very first wine that never left the property to be made. We are so excited about the prospects of having our own winery now and seeing what our property can achieve. Besides grapes, the Durants have the only commercial Olive Mill in the Pacific Northwest. They planted 17 acres of olives in 2003 and have been making their own olive oil since 2008. They are true pioneers that adhere to the “Code of the West.” Please visit us to try wine and olive oils, peruse our nursery and meander through trails on our property for an extremely unique Oregon experience.
The Winery
First and foremost, the Durant Family strives to be viticulturists whose wines reflect careful farming and craftsmanship. Founders in the Oregon wine industry, with our first plantings in 1973, our goal is to produce wines that reflect the tradition of high quality: 100% estate-grown fruit, proudly labeled as Durant Vineyards. We are also grateful for the many years that we have spent producing Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Pinot gris fruit for some of the best wineries in Oregon.
