The Wine
The 2019 Hyland Estates Auction lot, “Coury in the Jory,” is a blend of the original blocks; 1D, 1F, 3C and newer Block 6. Block 6 was harvested in late September while the older blocks were given an extra week to hang, gaining complexity and nuance. The 2019 vintage is classic Willamette Valley and classic Hyland Vineyard: vibrant acidity, lively tannins and incredible purity of fruit. We kept the 2019 Auction lot in barrel over vintage with incredible results. This lot is an exemplary version of Coury Clone Pinot noir, highlighting the graceful maturity of the vineyard, the thoughtfulness of the farming and the restraint of the winemaking.
Hyland Vineyard was planted in 1971 on the red Jory soils of the McMinnville AVA by the guiding hands of Oregon wine industry pioneers Charles Coury and Dick Erath. 47 acres of Hyland Vineyard is planted on its own roots with the controversial “Coury Clone” of Pinot noir, the largest single planting in the United States. Pinot noir from Hyland Vineyard typically displays a silky structure, loaded with sweet fruit and spice, while retaining the fruit’s freshness, tension and depth. The Coury Clone in particular shows darkly colored juice, with plush structure and bright fruit.

The Winery
Hyland Vineyard is one of Oregon’s most historic and storied vineyards. Planted in 1971, the vineyard now stretches over 185 acres among the picturesque foothills of Oregon’s Coast Range. Untouched, unmoved and self-rooted, Hyland’s gnarly 50-year-old vines remain entrenched in the red volcanic Jory soil from their bird’s-eye view overlooking the McMinnville foothills.
