In 1994, Winemaker Rob Stuart began working at Erath Vineyards. It was then that he met the legendary Vivian and Arthur Weber—pioneers who began planting their vineyard in the early 1970s—and fell for their stunning Pinot noir. They also became fast friends. When Rob left Erath and started his own winery in 2001, Vivian was among the first growers to say she wanted us to continue our work with her fruit. And so it’s been ever since. Rob crafted this wine specially to celebrate Vivian—the Grande Dame of the Dundee Hills.

This wine comes from Block 7 of the historic Weber Vineyard, which just falls off the top of the property to the east. It’s the Pommard clone, planted on its own roots in 1985. The nose opens with a heady aroma of violets and roses. Then there’s the characteristic spiciness on the palate—ginger and white pepper with a bit of cinnamon and nutmeg. The fruit is dark, like plum and blackberry. We find the wine is slightly tannic, but they’re lovely, soft tannins. All in all, it comes together in the most magical way, a true Pinot lover’s treasure.

In 2001, after years of working for others, we were finally able to realize the dream of creating the winery we’d always imagined. One where the quality of the wines is consistently high, but their price isn’t. Where the staff and growers are honored for the heart and soul they put into their work and where the customers are welcomed as friends. With our two estate vineyards and from a handful of carefully chosen others from around the Valley, we make wines that taste of the place they’re from and are authentic, approachable, intriguing and perfectly balanced.
