The Wine
In 2019 we set out to make a more elegant style of Pinot noir after heavy periods of heat in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 vintages. Earlier pick dates, greater use of remontage and delicate oak profiles were used to create our wines. This barrel selection of some of our favorite lots expresses this effort, utilizing the 828 (50%), Dijon 115 (38%) and Wädenswil (12%) clones, bound together with 40% new oak from a selection of six forests in France, aged for 15 months.
The concept of this wine is to create a memorable nose and midpalate using the Wädenswil clone, structure from the 115, and body and finish using the 828 clone.
The Winery
After a chance meeting with David Lett in 1974, owner Larry D. Miller acquired cuttings from his original Pinot stock brought to Oregon in 1965. He planted Stangeland Vineyard in 1978 and named it after his maternal Norwegian grandparents. Stangeland Winery was born in 1991 with initial production of 140 cases. Gold medals awarded in 2000, 2001 and 2008 at the Mondial du Pinot Noir in Switzerland set it apart from other Oregon wineries. We maintain our craftsman status by keeping our production small and local, barrel aging 100% of our Pinots, and sourcing additional fruit solely from Eola-Amity Hills.
