The Wine

The Carter Vineyard is an iconic vineyard located in the Eola-Amity nested AVA of the Willamette Valley. It is owned by renowned winemaker Ken Wright and his wife Karen and farmed by Seth Miller. The original The Magnificent Seven was a 1960 western starring Yul Brynner and was one of my Dad’s favorite movies. Because my parents had five kids, he referred our family as the “Mag 7.” To this day, that reference brings a smile to my face. As 2019 was the seventh vintage that I have worked with Carter, the “Mag 7” rides again.

Carter is a vineyard that is simultaneously consistent and beguiling. First planted in the early ’80s, the fruit for this bottling comes two blocks planted in the late ’90s. It is farmed with minimally and without the use of irrigation. It is always a winery favorite. The 2019 Pinot Noir Magnificent 7 is juicy and vibrant on the palate. Red fruits dominate with flavors of cranberry, red raspberry and pie cherry showing through. Bright acidity and ample tannins provide great aging potential for years to come.

The Winery

Tendril Wines is a Pinot noir–focused winery that represents a celebration of diversity. From white Pinot noir to whole-cluster red Pinot, the wide-ranging lineup is referred to as the “five-course meal” of Pinot noir. Like a multi-course meal, the wines progress in flavor and texture when tasted as a flight. Both single and multi-vineyard wines are encouraged.
