The Wine

The name “Second Wind” refers to Dave Paige’s second act on the Oregon wine stage, his second vintage as a soloist, and the Wind Ridge Vineyard on Ribbon Ridge that makes up two thirds of this blend. The balance is from Le Cadeau’s Black Hole Vineyard on Parrett Mountain, blending marine sediments and volcanic soils from opposite ends of the Chehalem Mountains. The result is an extravagant mix of dark cherries, tart blackberries and baking spices on the nose with wet granite and oolong tea tannins on the palate. Join us in celebrating our Second Wind!

“My favorite Pinots have a fruit quality that reminds me not so much of cherries or berries, but of the pits or seeds left in your mouth when that first juicy burst is fading. This is where fruit meets earth on the palate, where texture becomes simultaneously rich and gritty. That’s a balancing act of ripeness and freshness, extraction and elegance, that Willamette Valley Pinot noir can do when we are in tune with the vineyard. To see it we need to pay attention and be humble enough to learn from the fruit. We’re not forcing grapes into a box—we’re carefully building a new box to frame each new harvest. When done right, it seems effortless, and the fruit stands alone, center stage.” – Winemaker David Paige

The Winery

Dave Paige went out on his own in 2018, after 17 vintages of making wines from vineyards all over the Chehalem Mountains and the rest of the Valley. Now, with partners from the notable wine hotbed of Indiana, David Paige Wines bought a mature vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills and is establishing a new home base there. This 2019 Second Wind shows Dave’s old Chehalem Mountains roots, and his conviction that winemakers should be at the service of the fruit, not the other way around.
